Free Wind
Mitigation Inspection

The eligible homeowners receive a free wind-mitigation inspection at zero cost, which takes about an hour. During this inspection, a certified inspector visits your home and checks how well protected your home’s roof attachments and opening protection are against windstorms and hurricanes. You receive a report showing the current hurricane-resistant features your home has and recommended improvements to make it stronger, with the estimated cost range.

Grant Amounts

For the grant distribution, the program follows some rules. The maximum state contribution for the grant is up to $10,000. For standard grants, the state reimburses up to 2 dollars for every 1 dollar you spend. This is subject to approval, you roughly pay 1/3 and the program pays 2/3 of the cost. If you spend $15,000 on approved work, the state pays up to $10,000 and you cover the rest. Low‐income homeowners can get up to $10,000 without needing to match funds.

The improvement 3.0 includes roof deck attachment with better nailing patterns, while improvement 4.0 provides secondary water resistance under the roof deck.

How the Program Works

Apply for the Program

Go to the My Safe Florida Home Program portal, create an account with your details and submit your home’s information by filling in all the required details.

Inspection and Report

An approved wind-mitigation inspector will visit, check your home for wind-resistance against storms and prepare a report listing recommended improvements.

Review Recommendations

The inspection report will show which upgrades are required, with the estimates of potential cost ranges and possible reduction in insurance premiums.

Apply for a Grant

Once the inspection is done and if you are eligible, you will have to submit a grant application. The grants are generally reimbursement-based, which means you need to request a draw payment after completing the work.

Final Reimbursement

Hire a licensed contractor from the list of approved contractors provided by the program. Get the recommended mitigation work done through them.

Review Recommendations

Once upgrades are done, the program issues reimbursement based on its limits. You enjoy the benefits of a stronger home and possibly lower insurance bills.

Contractor-Specific Advice

Choosing the right contractor and materials is important when you apply for the My Safe Florida Home Program (MSFH) grant to upgrade your home. Here is how to pick a contractor:
  • Do your research and hire a contractor with a licence from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation for the work to qualify.
  • Ask for references of similar work, talk to neighbors or friends, check reviews on Google
  • Get detailed quotes or bids from the contractors to compare price, scope, timeline and materials
  • Insist on a detailed contract which clearly mentions the scope of work, materials to be used, payment schedule, warranty, who handles permits and inspections.
  • Communicate clearly for the inspection report recommendations, as the MSFH funding only covers improvements recommended in the inspection report.
  • Monitor the work, review the progress and ensure the work meets program code. Also, make sure your home is available for the final inspection after the upgrade is complete.

Why You Should Not Miss the MSFH Program

Funding in the MSFH Program is limited and is done on a first-come, first-served basis. The program has limited funds and once the allotted funds are used, applications are no longer accepted. Delay can increase the risk that your home remains vulnerable to hurricanes. Installing upgrades on time can improve the safety of your home and allow you to be at ease.
Materials and labor costs may rise if you delay. This can also mean higher costs due to a shortage of qualified installers and a reduced value of your grant. The sooner you act, the sooner you may qualify for insurance premium discounts and benefit from the insurance savings. Act quickly and apply for the My Safe Florida Home Program today.
